Get to know El Fuerte on El Chepe

Riding the Chepe Train is one of the things that all Mexicans should do at least once in their lives do at least once in a lifetime.


Huge valleys, desert areas, mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, chasms, lagoons and tropical jungle, are part of all the ecosystems that can be found in this long journey that goes from the capital of Chihuahua to Los Mochis, Sinaloa. More than 12 hours to witness all the changes of nature in the north of the country.


El Fuerte is one of the 4 Magical Towns of the State of Sinaloa; it is located on the Chepe railroad just two hours by train from Los Mochis. We tell you more about what you can do in this destination.




El Fuerte is the fourth most populated city in the state of Sinaloa. This colorful city offers natural and architectural attractions, but is especially famous for its deep-rooted Yoremes indigenous traditions.


What is the weather like?


During the course of the year, the temperature generally varies from 11 °C to 39 °C and rarely drops below 7 °C or rises above 42 °C.


The best times of the year to visit El Fuerte for hot activities are from mid-May to the end of June and from the end of September to mid-October.



Activities and tourist attractions


Tehueco


This is one of the 7 ceremonial centers in the area. In this beautiful town you can admire the church of Dolores, observe the ruins of the Jesuit temple.


The Miguel Angel Morales Ibarra Community Museum exhibits costumes, masks and instruments used during traditional dances, as well as objects from the daily life of the Yoreme Indians.


Cerro de la Máscara (Mask Hill)


12 km from the town you can cross the river and arrive at Cerro de la Máscara, an archeological zone. There are two ways to get there: by the new bridge that crosses the river and then walk for 40 minutes on a flagstone path, or by the rafts that leave from the town's boardwalk. The raft trip lasts 3 to 4 hours and is for eight people. This archaeological zone of the Mayos includes about 300 glyphs engraved with symbols typical of their mythologies. It is said that those who go there around six in the morning or five in the afternoon will be able to walk through the secret forest and appreciate the birds that inhabit this beautiful region.
